the empire state building
The empire state building is probably the most famous tower in the world. it is a 102 story skyscraper located in new york's Midtown. it is 432 metres high (1454 ft) and was built in 1931. at the time it was built, the empire state building was the tallest building in the world, now it is the 23rd tallest building in the world and the 3rd tallest in New york. The vast majority of the building is taken up by offices, however there are 2 observation decks open to the public, offering magnificent views across new york. SO what's inside the empire state building? |
so now we know a bit about it, lets have a closer look at what's inside this tower, starting from the top....
Antenna/Lightning rod
About The top of the empire state building is covered by a series of broadcast antennas, used by radio and television networks. Attached to the top of these antennas is a lightning rod, used to prevent damage to the other parts of the building should lighting strike. The first antenna tower was added to the empire state building in 1952 for NBC, now nearly all of New york city's television and radio stations have broadcast from the top of the building. |

102-86 observation decks About The observation deck on the 102nd floor of the empire state building is the highest point the public can access. it is a fairly compact, circular room offering the highest and best views of new york city. it is located on the top of the empire state building's art deco spire and was originally intended to be used as a docking point for giant airships. These airships would have carried passengers from across the Atlantic, much like a cruise ship. The idea was quickly abandoned due to safety concerns. This observation deck is the highest vantage point in new york city, however it will be overtaken in 2015 when the one world trade centre observation deck opens. The 86th floor observation deck is one of the most popular observatories in the world, over 100 million people have visited and enjoyed the magnificent views of Manhattan and beyond. The 86th floor is much larger than the 102nd and can therefore accommodate many more people. Be aware that the queues for the observation decks are notorious for being very long, with waiting times often over 1 hour. |

85-0 offices
About almost every floor of the empire state building is devoted to office space, in total there si 200,500 m2 (2,158,000 sq ft) of office space. The buildings completion was unfortunately timed to be in the middle of the great depression, most of the office space was therefore unoccupied for quite some time. In the present day however, the empire state building is crammed full of companies, large and small, filling the building with thousands of workers. In fact, over 20,000 people work in the building. |
